Location

A few things that make the last stretch much more comfortable.

• If possible, please try to arrive during daylight. The roads to Bajos del Toro are safe, but sometimes not perfectly paved. With daylight the drive is simply much more comfortable.
• Fuel up before driving to Bajos del Toro. There is no gas station in the village.
• A small supermarket in the village is available for basic supplies.
• There is no pharmacy in the village. Medical services are in Río Cuarto, a 30-minute drive.

The route via Sarchí → Bajos del Toro is the shortest and fully paved, but it is a mountain road and therefore quite steep in some sections.

If you prefer a gentler drive you can also come via:

• Río Cuarto → Bajos del Toro (easiest drive)
• Zarcero → Bajos del Toro (very scenic)

• Just 1.4 km from the famous Blue Falls (closed Sundays), a 20-minute walk or a short drive
• Finca San Rafael only 170 m away, perfect for walking to a blue-water waterfall and natural pool
• Several waterfalls within a 10-minute drive: Cascada Pozo Azul, Dinoland, Tesoro Escondido, Catarata Vuelta del Cañón
• Catarata del Toro viewpoint and Juan Castro Blanco National Park are a short drive
• 12 minutes by car to the center of Bajos del Toro

• 1.2 hours from Juan Santamaría International Airport
• About 1.5 hours from San José
• 30 minutes from Río Cuarto, a small town with a lagoon (kayaking and paddleboarding), plus a gas station, larger supermarkets, produce markets, pharmacies, hardware stores, and banks

The village is between two national parks (Juan Castro Blanco and Poás Volcano). Days can reach about 26°C and nights about 14°C. Bring waterproof clothing, warm layers, and proper hiking clothes.

Most guests stay 2–3 nights because there is much more to explore than expected.
