Waterfalls

Blue Falls & Catarata del Toro

A truly magical stretch of cloud forest. Blue Falls are famous for unreal turquoise water, coloured by volcanic minerals: crystal-clear pools with swimming allowed, jungle trails, and viewpoints. Nearby, Catarata del Toro plunges into an ancient volcanic crater: spectacular viewpoints, lush forest, a more dramatic visit (no swimming). Both are part of the same private reserve and combine easily in one day.

Important: all visits start at Catarata del Toro, where you buy tickets, for one site or a combo.

What to expect

  • Difficulty: easy to moderate
  • Blue Falls: short hikes between waterfalls
  • Catarata del Toro: stairs and viewpoints (optional descent)
  • Opening hours: Monday–Saturday, 7:00 AM–5:00 PM. Closed Sundays
  • Combo ticket recommended. Plan around 3–5 hours for both
  • Bring swimwear, hiking shoes, and a light jacket
  • Best in the morning: fewer people, clearer water
  • 1.4 km, about a 20-minute walk or a short drive from Villa Oropéndola
  • Instagram: @bluefallsofcostarica

Finca San Rafael

Finca San Rafael

A peaceful private reserve in the heart of the cloud forest, with a more hidden waterfall, quiet trails, birdwatching, off the beaten path. Less visited than the big names; ideal if you want a quieter morning.

  • Difficulty: easy to moderate. Short forest trails; some uneven ground in rain
  • Only 170 m from Villa Oropéndola
  • Hours vary, check ahead

Dinolandia

Dinolandia

A fun, slightly unexpected stop: life-sized dinosaur sculptures along easy forest trails. Good for families and anyone who wants something playful after the waterfalls.

  • Difficulty: easy. Some muddy sections after rain
  • Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–4:00 PM; Saturday & Sunday 7:00 AM–5:00 PM
  • Tuesday closed (except holidays / high season). Last entrance around 3:30 PM
  • About 5 minutes by car from Villa Oropéndola

Catarata Tesoro Escondido

A hidden gem. The trail is steeper (moderate: stairs and uneven ground) and ends at a secluded waterfall. Swimming is sometimes possible; natural pools too.

Cascada Pozo Azul

Bright blue pools from the same volcanic minerals as Blue Falls, great for a swim and a slower afternoon. Short walk to the pools; steeper walk to the waterfall.

  • Daily 7:00 AM–4:00 PM (confirm ahead)
  • About 10 minutes by car from Villa Oropéndola
  • Instagram: @cascadas.pozoazul

Food & coffee

Food and coffee in Bajos del Toro

Bar Toro Amarillo

Authentic Costa Rican dishes, relaxed and welcoming. Luis, the owner, is known for his hospitality, and you might even get a complimentary shot after the meal.

  • Try the chifrijo. Vegetarian options available
  • Lunch or a casual dinner. Karaoke on weekends
  • Instagram: @restdbartoroamarillo

La Terraza del Café

A café with views, for a slow morning or an afternoon break. Real coffee people: several brewing methods, plant-based milk (almond, soy, oat).

Ficus Pizza

Small-town pizza that actually hits the spot after a day on the trails, especially in the cool mountain air.

Pesca de Truchas Yiye

Very local, almost homemade. The specialty is trout (trucha): fresh, straightforward, the kind of place locals go.

Tours & canyoning

Tours around Bajos del Toro

Senderos del Toro

Small local company for guided hikes (caminatas), from easy walks to more challenging routes, including Río Agrio, Blue Falls, and hidden waterfalls. Simple, authentic, guides who know the valley.

Wildpath.cr

Birdwatching walks and night tours in the cloud forest (frogs, insects, sometimes mammals). Personal, nature-first, local guides.

Drops Canyoning

One of the few specialised canyoning outfits here: rappel waterfalls, slide rock, jump pools. Small, local, safety-focused. Tours for beginners and more advanced routes; they provide helmet, wetsuit, ropes.

Arrival

Please try to arrive during daylight if you can. The roads to Bajos del Toro are safe, but sometimes not perfectly paved, and daylight makes the drive much more comfortable.

  • Fuel up before the last stretch. There is no gas station in the village.
  • A small supermarket in the village covers basic supplies.
  • There is no pharmacy in the village. Medical services are in Río Cuarto, about 30 minutes by car.

The shortest paved route is Sarchí → Bajos del Toro. It is a mountain road, steep in places. For a gentler drive, come via Río Cuarto (easiest) or Zarcero (very scenic).

Tell us where you are coming from and we will suggest the easiest route. The Location page has the same notes next to the map.

The cabin

Check-in and access notes come after you book. Evenings are cool. A torch helps between the terrace, fire pit, and cabin after dark.

Never leave a fire unattended. The hot tub is on the terrace, so keep it clean for the next guest.

Still more

Even with these highlights, Bajos del Toro is a waterfall valley with more cascades, rivers, and jungle days than we can list. Discover it during your stay at Villa Oropéndola.
